Ministry to request fishing rights be revoked for dam
KUMAMOTO, Japan - Ryuichiro Kozuru shows ayu fish he caught in the Kawabe River in Kumamoto Prefecture. The central government decided Dec. 11 to employ a last-ditch tactic to pave the way for the construction of a dam in the upper reaches of the river by filing for the expropriation of fishing rights in the region, a move likely to trigger opposition from environmentalists and local fishermen.
