LDP tax panel scraps plans to raise cigarette tax

TOKYO, Japan - Members of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party's (LDP) Tax System Research Commission are in session at Tokyo's Nagatacho on Dec. 12. The panel decided to scrap plans to raise taxes on cigarettes and low-malt brews known as ''happoshu'' in fiscal 2002.
