Suspicious ship flees despite Coast Guard's halt order

TOKYO, Japan - An unidentified ship is seen in a photo taken by the Japan Coast Guard sailing in the East China Sea, 250 kilometers northwest off Amamioshima Island, southwest of the Japanese main island of Kyushu, at 9 a.m. on Dec. 22. Coast guard patrol vessels issued an order to halt, but the ship ignored the order and fled.

              The Aerospace Structures Laboratory of Kanagawa University will conduct a flight demonstration in September of a hybrid rocket whose components are being jointly developed with a small and medium-sized manufacturing company in Ota-ku, Tokyo. The target altitude is a maximum of 15 kilometers, and in order to reach this altitude, the vehicle has been made larger than before, and the basic technology will be established with the aim of reaching the target altitude of 100 kilometers by 2022.                 Demonstration experiment using Osaka City University's fuel-cell vehicles to operate ships on hydrogen

                Shigeyuki Minami, a special-appointment professor at the Organization for Advanced Research and Development, Osaka City University, and his colleagues on April 1 unveiled a demonstration experiment of a hydrogen fuel cell-powered ship (photo) that can drive a fuel cell vehicle as a hydrogen power generation system. It was jointly developed with Current Dynamics (Sumiyoshi Ward, Osaka City). It will be equipped with Toyota Motor Corporation's "MIRAI" fuel cell vehicle and can carry up to 50 cubic meters of hydrogen. It has already obtained an operation license from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism. It can travel for about 13 hours at a speed of 8 kilometers per hour, and about 93 hours at a speed of 4 kilometers per hour.                   Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. announced today that it has successfully conducted an experiment to operate an unmanned aircraft system combining aerial and underwater flying robots (drones) from a distance of 1,000 kilometers. A dedicated line connected the experimental monitoring area in Kyushu to the company's office in Marunouchi, Tokyo. It was confirmed that the drone could be operated until it detected a suspicious ship approaching the area via radar, rushed to the area, monitored it, and automatically tracked it. In the future, we will conduct experiments at longer distances and increase the number of drones. The system will be commercialized by the end of fiscal 2019. Mitsubishi Heavy Industries has developed an attitude control technology for aerial drones that can withstand typhoon-force winds of 30 meters and fly stably.
