OSAKA, Japan - Mamoru Takuma (file photo) pleads guilty to charges of killing eight children and injuring 13 others and two teachers at Ikeda Elementary school in Osaka Prefecture on June 8 during the first hearing of his trial at the Osaka District Court on Dec. 27.

            On April 21, Moss Food Service disclosed to the press an experiment to introduce a "slow cash register" using Orihime (photo), an alter ego robot from ORIY Laboratory (Minato-ku, Tokyo), at the Moss Burger Osaki store (Shinagawa-ku) from April 27. People with disabilities, those raising children, and others who have difficulty going out of the house will be able to place their orders while being served by Orihime. Payment is made at a manned cash register, but the company plans to expand the service to include everything from ordering to payment. Orihime, a 23-centimeter-long robot, will be installed in front of the cash register. The order is transferred to the store via the Internet and the order is completed.                     Foxter Corporation (Toyonaka City, Osaka Prefecture) will release in May a hybrid image processing system that combines Preferred Networks' (PFN, Chiyoda Ward, Tokyo) artificial intelligence (AI) visual inspection and conventional image processing methods.The company will market the system in Japan and China in cooperation with a subsidiary of the OPTEX Group, which is engaged in the manufacture of lighting for image processing, in terms of sales and service. The sales target is 200 units a year. Auto parts manufacturers and others have already begun to introduce the system on a trial basis.
