Former Asahi Shimbun president dies at 94
TOKYO, Japan - Tomoo Hirooka (in file photo), a former president of the Asahi Shimbun newspaper, died of prostate cancer Jan. 5 at a hospital in Tokyo's Chuo Ward. He was 94. Joining the Asahi Shimbun in 1923, Hirooka progressed up the ranks from editorialist to managing director, and then served as president of the major daily from 1967 to 1977 and chairman from 1977 to 1980.
