YOKOHAMA, Japan - A couple and their daughter eat grilled beef at an event in Yokohama's Minato-Mirai district on Jan. 14. The Kanagawa prefectural government and livestock farming-related groups in the prefecture held the grilled beef or ''yakiniku'' party to help restore consumer confidence in beef, which has dropped off severely after last year's mad-cow disease scare in Japan.

Gov't ordered to pay 2.75 bil. yen over noise from Atsugi base

YOKOHAMA, Japan - A lawyer for local residents around the Atsugi base in Kanagawa Prefecture holds up a banner in front of the Yokohama District Court on Oct. 16, which says the court ruled that a noise level on the Weighted Equivalent Continuous Perceived Noise Level index greater than 75 is illegal. Kanagawa to destroy 37 cows on farm in latest BSE case

YOKOHAMA, Japan - A cow is pulled into a truck on Sept. 6 at a dairy farm in Isehara, Kanagawa Prefecture, where Japan's fifth case of mad cow disease was found last month, to be destroyed due to fear it may be infected. A total of 37 cows at the farm will be destroyed.

Snow Brand Food admits to more beef-labeling fraud

TOKYO, Japan - Senior Snow Brand Food Co. officials bow at a news conference at the company's head office in Tokyo's Chuo Ward on Jan. 28. The company, already hit by a scandal for falsely labeling meat to claim government subsidies in connection with mad cow disease, admitted that two of its employees intentionally mislabeled beef from Hokkaido to pass it off as Kumamoto Prefecture beef.

All Snow Brand Food products removed from stores

KOBE, Japan - All Snow Brand Food Co. ham and sausage, delicatessen and processed-meat products are removed from shelves at a supermarket in Kobe on Jan. 26, as its scandal relating to mad cow disease was unveiled. Snow Brand Food's employees in Itami, Hyogo Prefecture, repackaged 13.8 tons of Australian beef last October in order to pass it off as Japanese beef and claim government compensation under the buyback scheme.
