Ministry unveils mine-clearing robots for Afghanistan

TOKYO, Japan - The Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Ministry unveils the six-legged robot ''Comet 2'' under development designed to detect and remove land mines in Afghanistan at an annex of the ministry in Tokyo on Jan. 18. Comet 2 can detect ordinary mines as well as plastic ones which cannot be spotted by a metal detector with a sonic wave radar.

Tagawa coalmine chimneys to be named tangible cultural property

FUKUOKA, Japan - This pair of brick chimneys at the Ida coalmine operated by the former Mitsui Tagawa Mines in Tagawa, Fukuoka Prefecture has been proposed as Registered Tangible Cultural Property by the Council for Cultural Affairs. The chimneys are among 201 historical buildings the council designated as Registered Tangible Cultural Properties in a proposal sent to Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Minister Bummei Ibuki on June 15. Built in 1908, the 45-meter-high chimneys were used as smoke outlets for steam boilers used inside the coalmine. (Kyodo)

Anthropologist Tamotsu Aoki named as cultural agency head

TOKYO, Japan - Anthropologist Tamotsu Aoki, who was appointed as head of the Agency for Cultural Affairs on March 27. (File photo). It follows a similar letter received on Nov. 6 from another student who appears to be a male. S. Korean lawmakers demand revisions to screened textbooks
