TOKYO, Japan - Nine major Japanese, South Korean and European electronics firms unveil a uniform standard for next-generation recordable DVDs (displayed by woman in photo) on Feb. 19 in Tokyo to expand the DVD market. The Blu-ray Disk, named for its use of blue-violet semiconductor laser beams, enables the recording, rewriting and playback of up to 27 gigabytes of data on one side, roughly six times the video and sound data capacity of a conventional DVD.
