Panel calls for steps to boost venture businesses in Japan

TOKYO, Japan - A panelist addresses a symposium on venture business held in Tokyo on March 8. The National Forum on Entrepreneurship and Venture Business, headed by Shibaura Institute of Technology President Leo Esaki, presented a report calling on the government to reform Japan's systems in areas from taxation to education so as to promote venture businesses.

          On April 15, Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike requested the cooperation of Tokyo residents and businesses in accordance with the Act on Special Measures against the New Coronavirus, after an expert panel raised the status of the new coronavirus infection in Tokyo to the most serious of four evaluation levels. He said he would not issue a request for the closure of businesses at this time, but would request the government to establish penalties for businesses that do not respond to requests for closure under the special measures law. As for the government's "GoTo Travel" tourism promotion plan, which is scheduled to be launched on March 22, he said, "In light of the current infection situation, I hope (the government) will carefully reconsider the timing and method of implementation.                     On April 23, EDION announced that it had acquired all shares of Yumemi (Yodogawa Ward, Osaka City), which operates a children's programming school called "Robodan," making it a subsidiary. The company said the shares were acquired from Akinori Shigemi, president of Yumemiru, and venture capitalists. In December 2018, EDION entered the robot programming education business for elementary and junior high school students, accelerating the expansion of the business in anticipation of making programming education compulsory in elementary schools from fiscal 2008.                       Applied has set up a permanent booth in its store with the latest information and communication equipment, including artificial intelligence (AI) systems and flying robots (drones), to meet the needs of IoT (Internet of Things) product development. In Fukuoka, where entrepreneurship is thriving, the goal is to create a point of contact where venture businesses and university developers can easily come into contact with the equipment. The booth, named "HPC (High Performance Computing) Solutions," was first set up at the Applied Hakata branch (Hakata Ward, Fukuoka City) (photo).
