Coast guard crew cited for service in mystery ship incident

KAGOSHIMA, Japan - Masao Kurusu, captain of a Japan Coast Guard (JCG) patrol boat, the Amami, receives a JCG award March 11 at Kagoshima port for meritorious service in chasing a suspected North Korean ship off the island of Amami-Oshima in Kagoshima Prefecture last December. He was one of the crew members from four patrol boats awarded the JCG's highest citations for the service.

                NAGASAKI, Japan - The Daiei Maru No. 11 (C), with a fishing net covering half of its deck, is pulled up to the surface by a crane ship from a depth of some 80 meters off Hirado Island, Nagasaki Prefecture, on Sept. 22, 2009, where it sank on April 14 while heading to the East China Sea. The salvage work is being conducted with hopes of recovering the remains of 12 crew members who went missing in the accident.

                  KITAKYUSHU, Japan - The Japan Coast Guard survey ship Kaiyo heads out to sea from Moji port in Kitakyushu, Fukuoka Prefecture on Sept. 11 to take part in a joint Japan-South Korea radioactivity survey mission in the southwestern region of the Sea of Japan, including waters close to the disputed Takeshima island, or Dokdo in Korean.
