Hitachi unveils world's 1st liquid-cooled PC

TOKYO, Japan - A woman shows a test model of the world's first liquid-cooled notebook personal computer March 14 in Tokyo. The liquid-cooled system, developed by Hitachi Ltd., is designed to dissipate heat from a high-speed microprocessor.

            The current test vehicle, the L0 Series, is the first commercial version and recorded the world's fastest speed of 603 km/h in 2003. The improved test car shown to the public has a new top shape. In the L0, the front lighting and forward vision camera on the top of the car were moved to the top. Another feature of the L0 is that the gas turbine power generator required for the test line has been eliminated, and only the induction current collection system, which is the target for the commercial specification, is used to supply electricity.               JAXA's fairing separation and release test for the H3 rocket

              On April 17, the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) conducted a separation and release test of the fairing (the tip of the rocket) for the new H3 core rocket at Kawasaki Heavy Industries' Harima Works in Harima, Hyogo Prefecture (photo). The fairing is a container that protects the satellite from wind pressure and frictional heat from the air while the rocket flies in the atmosphere. The internal capacity of the satellite is 2.3 times larger than that of the "H2A" 4S model. Carbon fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP) layers were used for the perimeter panels, and the number of panels assembled was reduced by enlarging each panel to keep costs down.                 The development of virtual space (VR) technology for business-to-business (B-to-B) is active. USHIO LIGHTING (Chuo-ku, Tokyo) has developed the world's first system that allows two people to experience stereoscopic vision through VR at the same time. Two major printing companies have released VR systems that are linked to CAD data of houses and condominiums. With the newly developed system, a special program generates a total of four types of images necessary for VR stereoscopic viewing for two people according to the location information grasped by the sensor, and when projected on the wall, floor, or side using three 240 Hz projectors, highly immersive images can be experienced simultaneously from two directions.                   The city of Oita will operate an automated low-speed electric small bus for citizens in the center of the city until March 20 (photo). The buses will be operated automatically, equivalent to "Level 2," with a driver on board and an automatic driving system to assist with steering correction and speed adjustment. The buses will be in operation from 10:00 to 16:15. Rides will be accepted at the drop-off and pick-up points on a first-come, first-served basis.                     Okaya Heat Treatment Industry (Okaya City, Nagano Prefecture) has invested about 60 million yen to installa medium-sized atom nitriding system manufactured by Plasma Research Institute (Tenpaku Ward, Nagoya City). When hardening the surface of high-speed steel (HSS), etc., this equipment can perform surface nitriding treatment uniformly even on objects with complicated shapes, with almost no secondary compounds in the diffusion layer of nitrogen atoms. Mr. Takizawa, president of Okaya Heat Treatment Industry, said, "In order to stably apply hard coatings on tools, etc., further secondary processing is necessary, but such technology is also being established. In the future, the company plans to expand its business to include the hard coating base treatment of cemented carbide tools and high durability surface treatment of blades.                       Yushin has released an image inspection system called "FSS" that immediately detects heat seal defects that occur when filling sachets containing liquids used for food and other purposes. Compared to manual inspection work, this system saves manpower and costs, and increases the accuracy of inspection. The FSS uses a camera to inspect the sealing part of a liquid filling and packaging machine when it is filled with liquid and the edges of the film are sealed by heating. The inspection area can be determined by setting in advance the size of the mechanism called the "sealing plate" that applies heat to the film. If wrinkles, bites, foaming, or other defects that could lead to liquid leakage are found in the sealing area, the sachet is discharged.
