A-bomb film by director Yoshida shown at Cannes

CANNES, France - Japanese director Kiju Yoshida (C) attends the premiere of his film ''Women in the Mirror'' May 23 at the 55th Cannes International Film Festival in Cannes, France. The film, starring Yoshida's wife, actress Mariko Okada (R), aims to show the psychological impact of the 1945 atomic bombing in Hiroshima and the war through telling the story of the life of a woman exposed to radiation.

Nuclear agency compared radioactive material to "agitated wife"

TOKYO, Japan - Photo shows an illustration the Japan Atomic Energy Agency used on its website of a woman raising her fist and screaming at her husband next to her. The captions next to the image say the wife's scream can be compared to radiation, her agitated state to radioactivity, and the wife herself to radioactive material. The agency removed the page from its website on June 4, 2012, after it triggered an outpouring of criticism as a gross form of discrimination against women.

'Tasogare Seibei' sweeps 12 prizes at Japan Academy Awards

TOKYO, Japan - Director Yoji Yamada (L) and actress Rie Miyazawa (R) attend the Japan Academy Awards on March 7 at a Tokyo hotel where Yamada's film ''Tasogare Seibei'' (The Twilight Samurai) swept 12 of 14 awards, including best film, best director, best actor and best actress, which went to Miyazawa. 76 A-bomb survivors seek recognition of sickness

HIROSHIMA, Japan - The man and woman at the table in the Hiroshima municipal office July 9 are among 76 survivors of the 1945 U.S. atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki who asked eight prefectural governments the same day to recognize them as sufferers of radiation-induced illnesses. The applicants will be eligible for special medical benefits if the local governments recognize that their diseases were caused by exposure to atomic bombing radiation.
