Ayako Uehara wins Tchaikovsky piano contest

MOSCOW, Russia - Japanese pianist Ayako Uehara wins first prize on June 21 in the piano contest at the 12th International Tchaikovsky Competition. Uehara, 21, who started playing piano at age 3, is the first Japanese to win the piano division in this prestigious contest for young musicians.

Songwriter, novelist Yamaguchi dies at 77

HOKKAIDO, Japan - Hokkaido farmer Shoji Shirai gets the first prize for producing a pumpkin weighing 541 kilograms in a contest in Takikawa, Hokkaido, on Oct. 1. The pumpkin was larger than one that weighed 443 kg which he grew in 1998.

Noted economist Morishima dies at 80

TOKYO, Japan - Renowned economist Michio Morishima (file photo), professor emeritus at the University of London and Osaka University, died of old age at a hospital in Britain on July 13, Osaka University said on July 15. He was 80. Morishima, who was from Kobe, western Japan, and resided in Brentwood, Essex, made contributions to the progress in theoretical economics and was a one-time candidate for a Nobel Prize in economics.
