SAN FRANCISCO, United States - Kenichi Horie waves from his yacht MALT's Mermaid 3 against the backdrop of San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge on July 17 as he completes a two-month voyage across the Pacific. Horie left Shin-Nishinomiya in Hyogo Prefecture on May 12 in a journey that recreated his historic 1962 solo trip to the West Coast city. He has now made seven solo trips across the Pacific.

SAN FRANCISCO, United States - Japanese yachtsman Kenichi Horie offers flowers at the tombstone of former San Francisco Mayor George Christopher on the outskirts of San Francisco on July 18, one day after completing a two-month solo voyage across the Pacific. Christopher, who died in September 2000, welcomed Horie as a hero in 1962 when he first accomplished the trans-Pacific solo voyage although he did not have a passport or visa.

The Mermaid 3 is made of recycled beer cans, whiskey barrels, plastic bottles and other materials. It is the same shape and size as the boat Horie used in his first Pacific voyage 40 years ago. The adventurer has made seven solo trips across the Pacific.
