A-bomb survivor from Brazil seeks medical care

HIROSHIMA, Japan - Shunji Mukai, a survivor of the 1945 atomic bombing of Hiroshima who lives in Brazil, on Aug. 3 urges the Japanese government to guarantee the provision of medical care to victims living outside Japan. ''We are also A-bomb victims. I hope the Japanese government will provide us with medical treatment even in Brazil,'' Mukai, 72, said at an international conference held by the Japan Council Against A and H Bombs (Gensuikyo) in Hiroshima. HIROSHIMA, Japan - A supporter of South Korean plaintiffs who sued the Japanese government and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd. for 440 million yen in damages holds up a banner in front of the Hiroshima High Court on Jan. 19 showing the plaintiffs' claim was partially admitted by the court. The court ordered the state to pay 1.2 million yen in damages to each of the 40 plaintiffs, who were affected by the 1945 atomic bombing of Hiroshima while forced to work at Mitsubishi's factory in Hiroshima as conscript laborers during World War II. Paris wants to host A-bomb exhibition next summer

American Zen priest promotes Jizo project for Hiroshima, Nagasak

KYOTO, Japan - Jan Chozen Bays (R), an American Zen master, speaks with reporters at a Kyoto hotel on Aug. 4. She called for people to join a project to make some 270,000 statues and written images of Jizo Bodhisattva to represent the victims of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and promote world peace. Bays said she came up with the idea when she visited Hiroshima and Nagasaki two years ago. Jizo Bodhisattva is the guardian of deceased children, expectant mothers, firemen, travelers, and pilgrims.
