Thorpe cruises in opening Pan Pacs heat

YOKOHAMA, Japan - Triple Olympic champion Ian Thorpe begins his latest medal trail on Aug. 24 by setting the fastest time in qualifying in the 400-meter freestyle at the Pan Pacific swimming championships. Thorpe cruises home almost seven seconds outside his winning time in Manchester in 3 minutes, 46.94 seconds at Yokohama International Pool.
