Justice Ministry releases 3 Afghan asylum seekers temporarily

OSAKA, Japan - The Justice Ministry's West Japan Immigration Bureau on Oct. 29 temporarily released Abdul Aziz (R) and two other Afghan asylum seekers who have been detained at a facility in Ibaraki, Osaka Prefecture, for violations of the immigration law. In September, Aziz had his refugee status recognized by the Hiroshima High Court. The two others have been denied refugee status by the ministry and are appealing their cases at district courts in Hiroshima and Nagoya. (Kyodo)

Immigration fingerprinting, photographing device on display

NARITA, Japan - The Immigration Bureau put a new fingerprinting and photographing device (photo) on public display at Narita International Airport on Nov. 13, a week before a new law requiring the fingerprinting and photographing of foreigners entering Japan comes into force. The law is aimed at preventing terrorism but officials say fingerprints and other biometric data will be stored in a database to be checked against foreigners who have been deported from Japan and those wanted by the Japanese police. The law excludes ethnic Koreans and other permanent residents with special status, foreigners aged under 16, visitors to Japan using diplomatic or official passports and state guests.

Nishimuro announces Livedoor's delisting

TOKYO, Japan - Tokyo Stock Exchange President Taizo Nishimuro tells a press conference in Tokyo on March 13 that the bourse will delist Livedoor Co. stock. The announcement came after the Securities and Exchange Surveillance Commission filed a fresh criminal complaint against the Internet company as well as against former President Takafumi Horie and four others over alleged securities law violations. TOKYO, Japan - Chinese members of Falun Gong, a sect outlawed in China, and their supporters appeal to Japanese immigration authorities not to detain them at a news conference in Tokyo on May 18. Court rejects WWII forced labor suit by 43 Chinese
