Groundbreaking ceremony for Afghan road repair project held

KABUL, Afghanistan - A groundbreaking ceremony for an internationally funded project to repair a 500-kilometer stretch of highway linking Afghanistan's capital with the southern city of Kandahar is held Nov. 10 in a Kabul suburb, attended by Afghan President Hamid Karzai (L) and Japanese Ambassador Kinichi Komano (C). The road improvement work is part of the $180 million aid project, financed by Japan, the United States and Saudi Arabia, for the war-torn country. (Kyodo)

The event was held using part of Shimanami Kaido, which is a 60 kilometer toll road that connects the city of Onomichi in Hiroshima Prefecture, on the main Japan island of Honshu, to the city of Imabari in Ehime Prefecture, on the island of Shikoku.
