(2)World's longest tree-lined avenue in Tochigi under threat

UTSUNOMIYA, Japan - A 35.4-kilometer stretch of cedar trees in Tochigi Prefecture that forms the world's longest tree-lined avenue is dying at the pace of 100 trees a year, according to a recent prefectural government study. The study cites as likely causes the difficulty that the trees have faced taking root due to asphalt pavements and the effects of automobile exhaust. (Kyodo)
