Windmill for power plant in Tokyo Bay completed

TOKYO, Japan - Workers attach 26-meter long blades to a 70-meter tall windmill on reclaimed land in Tokyo Bay on Jan. 17 to complete the construction of the Denmark-made windmill. The windmill is part of a wind power plant jointly constructed on the Tokyo waterfront by the Tokyo metropolitan government and private companies as part of measures against global warming. (Kyodo)

    Hokuriku Electric Power's "Assist Arm" robot for power distribution work

    Hokuriku Electric Power Company has completed the development of the "Assist Arm" (photo), a robot for power distribution work, and has begun deploying it. The robot will assist in the construction work, which used to be done by two people in a high-altitude work truck, enabling the work to be done by one person. This is the first time such a robot has been used in Japan. The company plans to adopt 10 more robots, including those of group companies, by the end of fiscal year 2019. The robots will be used for the most frequent part of the power distribution work, the wire separator work. In the past, high-voltage wires were cut and the cut wires were connected to each other with a temporary equipment called a wire separator by lifting a stick-shaped tool weighing about 10 kilograms. The robot will be able to cut wires and grab objects with an arm that can move in six axes with a single control grip, saving labor.       On the 21st, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government started a demonstration experiment of robots that can perform cooking and security tasks at the Takeshiba Passenger Boat Terminal in Minato Ward, Tokyo. The effect of the introduction of seven types of robots, which were selected from the public, will be verified at the 5th Takeshiba Summer Festival, an event held by Tokyu Land Corporation and Kajima Corporation as part of the area management of the Takeshiba district. As part of this effort, they provided the Takeshiba Natsufusu, which provides live music and dining space for local residents and workers in the neighborhood, as a place for the robot demonstration.               IHI's ocean current power generation system demonstrator "KAIRYU

              On the 25th, IHI unveiled its underwater floating power generation system demonstrator "KAIRYU" (photo) at its Yokohama Works (Isogo Ward, Yokohama City). It is being developed as part of a project by the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO), and generates electricity by turning 11-meter diameter fiberglass turbine blades underwater with the power of ocean currents. Compared to the previous operation, the autonomous control program that adjusts the tilt of the turbine blades and the floating structure during operation has been improved, and rectifier plates have been added so that the ocean currents will hit the blades more efficiently. Power generation efficiency is 50-70%, which is higher than that of solar power (12%), onshore wind power (20%), and offshore wind power (over 30%).
