GAGOSHIMA, Japan - A computer graphics released by Japan's Institute of Space and Astronautical Science (ISAS) shows how MUSES-C, the world's first space probe designed to retrieve surface samples from an asteroid, operates in the space. If operations go as planned, MUSES-C launched by ISAS on May 9 will meet asteroid 1998SF36 at 300 million kilometers from Earth in summer 2005 and return home two years later. (Kyodo)

Japan braces for 1st total eclipse in 46 yrs

TOSHIMA, Japan - This July 18 photo from a Kyodo News-chartered helicopter shows Akuseki Island south of the southwestern Japan prefecture of Kagoshima. A total solar eclipse can be observed on the island on July 22 for 6 minutes and 25 seconds, which will be the world's longest duration of the space show seen from an inhabited area in this century. The total eclipse will be the first in 46 years that can be seen from Japanese territory.

Matsushita to construct world's largest plasma panel plant

AMAGASAKI, Japan - Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. will invest about 280 billion yen to construct the world's largest plasma display panel plant with an annual production capacity of about 10 million units in Amagasaki, Hyogo Prefecture. Japanese probe makes world's 2nd-longest deep-sea cruise

TOKYO, Japan - The Urashima, a Japanese deep-sea probe, is hoisted out of the sea after achieving an unmanned submerged cruise of 220 kilometers, the second longest in the world after the 262 km achieved by a British probe. The photo was released June 22 by the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology. The Urashima, measuring 9.7 meters long, 1.3 meters wide and 1.5 meters high, started the cruise at a depth of 800 meters June 8 and covered the 220 kilometers in 43 hours before suspending the cruise due to an approaching typhoon. Mitsubishi Electric develops aquarium with 3-D computer graphics

OSAKA, Japan - Mitsubishi Electric Corp. said June 16 it has developed a ''virtual aquarium'' screen on which lifelike three-dimensional computer-controlled graphic images of fish and an underwater world are projected. The demonstration of the 4.8 meter-by-0.9 meter monitor is shown in Osaka, where graphical fish such as tunas and bonitos responded to a viewer's claps. (Kyodo)

NAGOYA, Japan - Russian Republic of Sakha President Vyacheslav Shtyrov shows off a picture of the head of a frozen mammoth believed to have lived 10,000 years ago and discovered in frozen soil 1,200 kilometers north of Yakutsk near the Arctic Ocean in November 2002. The mammoth will be on display at the 2005 World Exposition in Aichi Prefecture. (Kyodo)

Radar facility to track space debris opens in Okayama Pref.

OKAYAMA, Japan - The Kamisaibara Space Guard Center, which is the world's first radar station dedicated only to the observation of space debris, opens in the village of Kamisaibara, Okayama Prefecture, on April 6. The facility is capable of detecting an object 1 meter in diameter from 600 kilometers away and tracking up to 10 pieces of space debris simultaneously. (Kyodo)

TOKYO, Japan - A computer graphics provided by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) gives an image of its Mars probe Nozomi (Hope). JAXA gave up its attempt Dec. 9 after failing to repair the troubled probe by the deadline for its entering orbit around the Red Planet. (Kyodo)

NINGBO, China - This computer graphics gives an image of a new road bridge to be built between Shanghai and Ningbo across the Hangzhou Bay. Chinese officials said that the 36-kilometer-long bridge, the longest of its kind in the world, would cut the time needed to drive between the two cities by half to two hours. (Kyodo)
