Matsushita unit to launch theft-resistant electric bicycle

TOKYO, Japan - Photo shows an electric bicycle equipped with a Secom Co. global positioning system (GPS) designed to foil theft, which National Bicycle Industrial Co. will launch in August. The bicycle maker has developed a battery for its ViVi brand electric bicycles that can simultaneously supply electricity to the bicycle and recharge the COCO-SECOM portable GPS unit. The new bicycle will come in three models priced from 74,800 yen to 124,800 yen. (Kyodo)

                NEC's vector-based simulated annealing machine

                NEC is making a full-scale entry into the quantum computing domain. From April to June 2020, the company will launch a co-creation service to solve combinatorial optimization problems, including the use of annealing machines that employ the SX Aurora Tsubasa vector supercomputer. Prior to this, the company will establish a new 20-person Quantum Computing Promotion Office in January 2008 to promote the development of applications and technologies through joint demonstrations with customers. The company plans to invest about 1 billion yen in Canada's D-Wave Systems for collaboration. On the other hand, the quantum annealing system will be based on a domestically developed machine jointly developed with the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST) and D-wave, which will be a collaborative partner.                   EV Japan (Toyonaka City, Osaka Prefecture) will start selling small hydraulic power generation equipment that reuses automobile generators and batteries in September. Starting with the completion at the end of August of a demonstration unit consisting of a water wheel and a generator in Gojo City, Nara Prefecture, the company will begin to propose the unit to local governments and power companies as an independent and emergency power source in mountainous areas.                     Forest Sea (Koto-ku, Tokyo) will launch a long-range wireless terminal called "Geochat" this fall to prevent mountain climbers and forestry workers from getting lost. It is capable of two-way communication of up to 200 kilometers in a clear environment with no obstacles. Even when cell phones are out of range, such as in mountainous areas, workers can carry the terminal to send location information and emergency requests. The company is aiming for sales of more than 5 billion yen in the communication terminal business in five years. 920 megahertz (mega means one million) band radio waves with an output of 250 milliwatts will be transmitted over a long distance. It can reach more than 200 kilometers in a clear environment. Three repeaters were able to cover the mountainous area of Hakone, sending text of about 30 characters and location information from the Global Positioning System (GPS).
