Squid-patterned fireworks successful in Hakodate

HAKODATE, Japan - Squid-patterned fireworks explode in the night sky over Hakodate on southern tip of Hokkaido on Aug. 16 during a summer festival in the city's Yunokawa district. Festival organizers had tried in vain to use such squid-patterned fireworks over the past two years. (Kyodo)

Squid season starts in northern Japan

New tram starts operating north of Tokyo

UTSUNOMIYA, Japan, Aug. 26 Kyodo - A light rail transit train carrying children and others runs through Utsunomiya in Tochigi Prefecture, north of Tokyo, after a ceremony commemorating the start of the service is held at JR Utsunomiya Station on Aug. 26, 2023. Japan's first new tram system in 75 years covers the 14.6-kilometer route between the station and the nearby town of Haga in 48 minutes.

Japanese amberjack catch in northern Japan

File photo taken in November 2021 shows Japanese amberjack being landed at a port in Hakodate in Hokkaido. The catch of the fish has increased in the northern Japan city in recent years possibly due to rising sea temperatures related to global warming.

On the 21st, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government started a demonstration experiment of robots that can perform cooking and security tasks at the Takeshiba Passenger Boat Terminal in Minato Ward, Tokyo. The effect of the introduction of seven types of robots, which were selected from the public, will be verified at the 5th Takeshiba Summer Festival, an event held by Tokyu Land Corporation and Kajima Corporation as part of the area management of the Takeshiba district. As part of this effort, they provided the Takeshiba Natsufusu, which provides live music and dining space for local residents and workers in the neighborhood, as a place for the robot demonstration. Daimonji Festival in Kyoto

In the festival, formally known as Gozan no Okuribi, five giant bonfires are lit on mountains surrounding the city in the culmination of the Obon period in summer. In Japan, it is believed that each year during Obon, ancestors' spirits return to this world in order to visit their relatives. The purpose of the bonfires is to guide these souls back to heaven. 'Awa Odori' dancing robot unveiled

TOKUSHIMA, Japan - Tokushima Gov. Statue of Liberty replica removed

HAKODATE, Japan - An about six-meter-tall replica of the Statue of Liberty in Hakodate, Hokkaido, is moved by crane on Aug. 19, 2010, at the request of the city government, which found the statue damaged the cityscape. The district is designated as a historic townscape preservation area by the city.
