TOKYO, Japan - Fifteen companies, including Sony Corp., have established a joint venture to provide paid electronic publishing services to member customers, Sony and four other major partners announced at a news conference in Tokyo on Nov. 13. The new firm, Publishing link Ltd., will start distributing books over the Internet from spring 2004. (Kyodo)

        Akira Yoshino (photo), winner of the 2019 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, visited the Lithium Ion Battery Materials Evaluation Research Center (LivTech, Ikeda City, Osaka Prefecture), where he serves as president, for the first time since the award ceremony on April 18 and reported to about 70 people affiliated with the center. At the meeting, Dr. Yoshino said, "Everyone gathered here first thing in the morning. I gave them chocolates in the shape of Nobel Prize medals with my signature on them," he said with a smile. LivTech is a group of researchers from lithium-ion battery-related companies, researching electrode materials and next-generation all-solid-state batteries.           Maintenance of industrial robots installed at Daihen's customers' sites

          Daihen will start a service to realize maintenance of industrial robots installed at customers' sites via the Internet within the month. The service will appeal to small and medium-sized companies that are not familiar with handling robots. Daihen's IoT (Internet of Things) compatible FD19 robot controller is connected to the Internet (photo) to enable remote operation. This enables accurate confirmation of information that cannot be obtained by telephone inquiries alone, and is expected to reduce the burden of on-site response. There is no charge for using the maintenance service. In the future, the company plans to expand the service to overseas markets such as Southeast Asia, Europe, and the United States by utilizing the service centers it has established around the world.             Palantir Technologies (California) , a U.S. provider of big data analysis, announced on the 18th that it has established a joint venture with SOMPO Holdings (HD) (photo). On December 1, Palantir will provide a service to analyze all kinds of data within Japanese companies and public institutions, including Excel, e-mail, and call records. The data will be used to predict the possibility of free recalls of automobile parts and to detect money laundering. The new company, Palantir Technologies Japan (Chuo Ward, Tokyo), is 50% owned by Palantir and 50% by SOMPOHD. It will be capitalized at 100 million dollars (about 10.8 billion yen), and aims to achieve sales of 100 billion yen in the medium to long term. President Kengo Sakurada expressed his hope that the company will pursue its dream of becoming a real data platformer.               INDUSTRIAL-X SECURITY held an inaugural press conference in Tokyo on March 18. The company will provide total security solutions for safe control and automation of manufacturing sites.                 Kohyei Setsubi Kogyo (Yamagata City) is developing a business using a piping exploration robot. Within this year, the company will start a rental business of the robot in the three northern prefectures of Yamagata, Miyagi, and Fukushima. The target customers are facility construction companies, and the company aims to cultivate new projects for renovation and reconstruction of buildings by offering diagnosis services in the pipes. The rental business of the piping exploration robot is targeted at companies engaged in facility construction in the three southeastern prefectures. Each of them will recruit one or two distributors, including their group companies, by the end of this year. Each distributor will be assigned a cooperating agency to provide services such as pipe diagnosis using the robot. The company expects to expand its business to the eastern Japan area in the future.
