1st Japanese world champ Shirai dies
TOKYO, Japan - Yoshio Shirai (file photo), the first Japanese boxer ever to be crowned a world champion, died of pneumonia on Dec. 26. He was 80. In May 1952, Shirai won the world flyweight title in a decision in his international debut at the age of 29 and successfully defended it four times before he lost it on points to Pascal Perez of Argentina in November 1954.
