Beached whale rescued in Ehime Pref.

MATSUYAMA, Japan - A seven-meter-long whale is seen beached in Onishi, Ehime Prefecture, on Jan 12. Town and local coast guard officials, and firefighters joined hands in rescuing the whale. A fire engine pumped sea water to keep the skin of the whale from drying, while rescuers attached a rope to its tail fin and towed the whale into the sea with a fishing boat.             OSAKA, Japan - A 4.3-ton fishing boat is cut in two and capsizes after colliding with the 6,395-ton Panamanian freighter Mighty Dandy in the Seto Inland Sea off Kagawa Prefecture on May 7. Two people on the fishing boat were thrown into the sea, and one of them -- a 46-year-old woman -- was missing. The skipper of the fishing boat was rescued by a Japan Coast Guard vessel which happened to be near the scene, officials said.

              YAMAGUCHI, Japan - Two people were found dead in an overturned fishing boat in the sea off Yamaguchi Prefecture on Nov. 22, the Japan Coast Guard said. Photo shows the 4-ton Kazuyoshi-Maru No. 3 (bottom), found some 20 kilometers off Hofu in the same prefecture, being towed. As the boat had damage marks on it, the coast guard is investigating the possibility of a hit-and-run incident.
