TOKYO, Japan - Actress Rei Asami (in file photo) is among 18 recipients of the Art Encouragement Prizes for fiscal 2003 announced March 9 by the Agency for Cultural Affairs. The Art Encouragement Prize is presented to artists whose outstanding achievements have opened up new vistas. They are given in nine fields -- drama, film, music, dance, literature, fine arts, broadcasting, popular entertainment and critical reviewing. (Kyodo)

She was 105. Kobayashi, who lost her vision some three months after birth, joined a troupe of traveling entertainers called goze at the age of 5. Since then, she traveled, providing entertainment for people living in mountainous areas for 68 years until she entered a nursing home in 1973. (Kyodo)

                Yoko Watanabe, pioneer Japanese opera singer, dies at 51

                TOKYO, Japan - Yoko Watanabe (in an undated file photo), the first Japanese soprano to have performed in a lead role in all the world's four top opera houses, died of heart failure at her home in Milan on July 15, the Japan Opera Foundation said on July 16. She was 51. The four opera houses include La Scala in Milan and Wiener Staatsoper in Vienna. After graduating from the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music, she studied in Italy and completed a program at a research institute attached to La Scala.
