SAGA, Japan - Photo shows a wooden writing tablet which has been recovered from an excavation site in Saga Prefecture. The Saga Prefectural Board of Education said May 30 that the tablet, presumably dating back to the late 700s, has been found to contain records of ancient ''Sakimori'' soldiers who were deployed to the northern Kyushu region to guard coastal areas from foreign invasion. KASHIHARA, Japan - Charred pieces of what may be the oldest colored wall painting in Japan have been excavated from the remains of what is believed to be the original monastery of Horyuji Temple in Nara Prefecture, a local board of education said on Dec. 1. The biggest of the fragments (top left) measures 5 cm by 4 cm. It is the first time for wall painting fragments to be excavated from the monastery, said to have been built in 607 by Prince Shotoku (574-622) in the town of Ikaruga and destroyed by fire 63 years later. Mausoleum for Genghis Khan found by Japan-Mongolia research team

TOKYO, Japan - Photo, taken in September 2001, shows what is claimed by Japanese and Mongolian researchers to be a mausoleum for Genghis Khan (c. 1162-1227), founder of the Mongol Empire, in Mongolia. The team, comprising archaeologists from Japan and Mongolia, including researchers from Kokugakuin University and Niigata University, said in Tokyo on Oct. 4 they have found ruins of the mausoleum believed to have been built between the 13th and the 15th centuries at the Avraga site in central Mongolia.
