Hitachi develops PDA powered by fuel cell

TOKYO, Japan - Hitachi Ltd. said March 23 it has developed a prototype personal digital assistant (PDA) (held by an assistant at a news conference) powered by a fuel cell that runs about five hours. Hitachi plans to make the PDA more compact and extend its operational hours in the hope of launching sample shipments in 2005, a Hitachi official said. The prototype PDA weighs about 700 grams, more than twice as heavy as conventional PDAs, and Hitachi plans to reduce the weight to a level similar to conventional PDAs. (Kyodo)

          Toyota City has introduced Toyota's SORA fuel cell bus for public transportation.

          On August 8, Toyota City, Aichi Prefecture, held a ceremony to unveil the newly introduced "SORA," a mass-produced fuel cell bus manufactured by Toyota Motor Corporation. This is the first time that the city has introduced this vehicle in the Chubu region. A total of three vehicles were leased, two of which will be used by the Toyota Oiden Bus, a community bus running in the city, starting in September, and one will be used as an official vehicle. One will be used as an official vehicle, and the other will be used as a power supply vehicle in the event of a disaster. The vehicle introduced is the improved SORA, which Toyota began selling in August, with a total length of 10525mm, width of 2490mm, height of 3350mm, and a maximum capacity of 79 passengers.             Demonstration experiment using Osaka City University's fuel-cell vehicles to operate ships on hydrogen

            Shigeyuki Minami, a special-appointment professor at the Organization for Advanced Research and Development, Osaka City University, and his colleagues on April 1 unveiled a demonstration experiment of a hydrogen fuel cell-powered ship (photo) that can drive a fuel cell vehicle as a hydrogen power generation system. It was jointly developed with Current Dynamics (Sumiyoshi Ward, Osaka City). It will be equipped with Toyota Motor Corporation's "MIRAI" fuel cell vehicle and can carry up to 50 cubic meters of hydrogen. It has already obtained an operation license from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism. It can travel for about 13 hours at a speed of 8 kilometers per hour, and about 93 hours at a speed of 4 kilometers per hour.               Murata Manufacturing Co., Ltd. will startmass production of all solid-state batteries using ceramics technology within fiscal 2019.
