Fire damages replica of Columbus' Santa Maria in Kobe
KOBE, Japan - Firefighters fight to put out a fire aboard a replica of the explorer Christopher Columbus' Santa Maria on exhibition at the Meriken Park in Kobe on April 17. The fire was put under control about an hour later. The Santa Maria was the flagship of Columbus' fleet when he set sail on his first voyage across the Atlantic in 1492. The replica, about 32 meters long, was made in Spain in 1991. It spent the year of 1992 on an experimental voyage sailing from Barcelona to Kobe. (Kyodo)
