The high court awarded damages in full by overturning a July 2002 lower court ruling that rejected the lawsuit brought by Shao Yicheng, 78, and four other plaintiffs four years earlier against Nishimatsu Construction Co., a construction firm based in Tokyo. Suit filed to seek decommissioning of Hamaoka reactors

Located in a major active fault zone, Chubu Electric Power Co. suspended the plant's Nos. 3 to 5 reactors in May at the request of the central government in the wake of the nuclear crisis at the Fukushima Daiichi power plant crippled by the March 11 earthquake and tsunami. The Nos. 1 and 2 reactors at the Hamaoka plant were deactivated in 2008 for decommissioning.

YOKOSUKA, Japan - Lawyers speak to supporters after the Yokohama District Court ordered Sumitomo Heavy Industries Ltd. on Oct. 30 to pay a total of 210 million yen in damages to former employees who say they contracted pneumoconiosis by working at its shipyards. It is the first ruling on a case involving lung disease linked to employment at a shipyard, according to the plaintiffs' lawyers.
