NARA, Japan - Pointing to growth rings of the timbers used, two officials of the Nara National Research Institute for Cultural Properties brief reporters on Horyuji Temple on July 15. They said the temple's main hall in Ikaruga, Nara Prefecture has been found to have been built after 668, evidence against the theory that the famous temple was rebuilt between 708 and 714 after it was destroyed by a fire. Seen on the top are (1) the temple's five-storied pagoda and (2) main hall, believed to date from the 7th century. Horyuji Temple, the world's oldest wooden building, is designated as a World Heritage site.

                  TOKYO, Japan - Yoko Watanabe (in an undated file photo), the first Japanese soprano to have performed in a lead role in all the world's four top opera houses, died of heart failure at her home in Milan on July 15, the Japan Opera Foundation said on July 16. She was 51. The four opera houses include La Scala in Milan and Wiener Staatsoper in Vienna. After graduating from the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music, she studied in Italy and completed a program at a research institute attached to La Scala.
