        Kao and PFN collaborate on sebum RNA analysis

        On the 20th, Kao announced that it will collaborate with Preferred Networks (PFN, Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo) on the practical application of sebum RNA monitoring technology, which extracts and analyzes ribonucleic acid (RNA) from sebum. Artificial intelligence (AI) technologies such as machine learning and deep learning will be applied to the data obtained from sebum RNA. PFN's AI technology will be incorporated into this technology. Mr. Michitaka Sawada, President of Kao Corporation, said, "Accumulation of data makes prediction possible. "We can expect to use preventive cosmetics to improve the skin in a few years," he said. This technology is also expected to be used in the medical industry. The company is also conducting research with a view to using the technology in the early diagnosis of intractable diseases such as Parkinson's disease.           Professor Tetsuya Ogata and his teamat Waseda University have developed a technology that allows a deep learning model to learn and perform multiple actions. They demonstrated the function by applying it to a twin-armed robot folding towels.In the case of folding towels, four motions were learned, including folding the towel from the edge and repositioning the towel. We trained the deep learning model so that the internal state of the model is the same at the beginning and end of each action. For each of the four actions, we used a large deep learning model with about 300 cells and 400 steps. In this study, we learned multiple actions by connecting them to a single model. In the future, we will apply the model to complex operations such as skewering to verify the learning method suitable for each operation.             Double Giken's Communication Tool for ALS Patients

            Double Giken has developed a technology to identify the words a patient thinks from the blood flow in the brain and project them on a screen for ALS patients who cannot move their eyelids or fingers. The technology is based on a device that uses near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) to determine "yes/no" from brain activity. The patient selects one word at a time and only the vowel sound of the word to be communicated, and the number of words is used to analogize the candidate words to be communicated and show them on the screen. The system, which consists of a personal computer and a terminal, will go on sale in September at the earliest. It was developed with the support of the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) in collaboration with Professor Naoki Tanaka of Toyo University and others.
