TOKYO, Japan - Land, Infrastructure and Transport Minister Kazuo Kitagawa uses a palm-size device to obtain sightseeing info in English, Chinese and Korean in Tokyo's Asakusa district on April 12.           TOKYO, Japan - Alberto Stucki (R), whose wife and daughter were killed in Miyazaki in 2004, hands a petition with 80,000 signatures to Justice Minister Kunio Hatoyama at the Justice Ministry on Nov. 2, asking the government to set up a sentence of life imprisonment without parole. Stucki, 51, a resident of Kyoto with dual Italian and Swiss nationalities, has been taking issue with the Japanese penal system in which most inmates sentenced to life in prison are later released on parole. Stucki's wife and daughter were burned to death in May 2004 after a burglar broke into their home, stole 550,000 yen and set the house ablaze. The burglar is serving a term of life in prison. (Kyodo)

            TOKYO, Japan - Hitachi Ltd. said Oct. 22 that it has developed an antitheft device using a finger vein verification system, as shown in this picture. The company says a vehicle equipped with the system can only be started by a driver whose finger vein pattern has been stored in the vehicle's computer.               TOKYO, Japan - A luxury paid public toilet built at the new Akihabara shopping district in Tokyo is doing good business, drawing more than 30,000 customers in just half a year. The toilet, which has 160 square meters of floor space and features changing rooms and a computer corner with access to the Internet , is said to be popular with both tourists and trendy youths. Officials of Chiyoda Ward, which built the toilet adjacent to the JR Akihabara Station, say the changing rooms inside the toilet are particularly popular with ''costume play'' teenage girls who use the facility to change into maid uniforms or other trendy costumes for play.
