JAXA successfully deploys antennas on satellite

TOKYO, Japan - The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency successfully deployed both antennas on Japan's biggest satellite Kiku No. 8 on Dec. 26, a day after one of them failed to unfold properly. The antennas, the two honeycomb-shaped panels measuring 17 meters by 19 meters shown on this illustrated file photo, are used to receive and transmit signals. The 5.8-ton satellite was launched from the Tanegashima Space Center off southern Kyushu on Dec. 18 (Photo provided by the Aerospace Exploration Agency) (Kyodo)
