Japan asked to step up protection of endangered gray whales

TOKYO, Japan - A gray whale is seen swimming off the City of Sodegaura in Tokyo Bay in a photo taken in May 2005. The World Conservation Union has requested the Japanese government to step up protection of gray whales which often die near Japan after becoming entangled in a fixed fishing net, sources familiar with the matter said on Feb. 8.
