Hit by ethanol demand, hurricanes, beverage makers hiking prices

TOKYO, Japan - A series of hurricanes that hit Florida last summer, coupled with strong demand for ethanol, has prompted Japanese beverage makers to raise prices of orange juice this month. In addition, an increasing number of orange farmers in the United States and Brazil are switching to sugarcane and other crops from which ethanol is made, reflecting strong demand for bioethanol, which is drawing keen interest as an alternative to petroleum.
