1,221 bird species threatened with extinction
TOKYO, Japan - The Okinawa rail, a nearly flightless bird endemic to Okinawa island, is among 1,221 bird species considered threatened with extinction in a report released by BirdLife International, a bird conservation group based in Cambridge, England. The population of Okinawa rail is estimated at between 1,200 and 1,680, confined to the Yambaru area in northern Okinawa. According to BirdLife, 83 bird species in Japan are threatened or near threatened with extinction out of approximately 10,000 bird species in the world. (Kyodo)
