EU approves 60% cut in European eel fry catch
BRUSSELS, Belgium - A photo provided by the U.S. Geological Survey shows a grown-up European eel. The European Union on June 11 endorsed a proposal for a 60 percent cut in the catch of European eel fry by 2013 in the face of a decline in the population of eels caused mainly by growing exports to Japan by way of farms in China. The decision by fisheries ministers in the 27-member European Union at their meeting in Luxembourg is likely to cause a steep drop in the supply of eels in Japan, observers said. (Kyodo)
