TOKYO, Japan - A new Sony portable DVD player with a built-in terrestrial digital TV tuner to be on sale in Japan on Sept. 1. Sony Corp. says the device -- 23 centimeters by 3 cm by 17 cm -- can play continuously for six hours on the internal battery. (Kyodo)

            Towa Electric Industry (Kita Ward, Okayama City), in cooperation with Wako Denken (Yao City, Osaka Prefecture), has commercialized a low-cost 6-kilowatt battery charger for electric vehicles (EVs). The total price (excluding consumption tax) is about 200,000 yen if installation work is also undertaken, which is about half the cost of installing a standard 6-kilowatt charger. The battery can be recharged in 12.5 hours with Nissan's LEAF e+ EV, halving the recharging time compared to a 3-kilowatt charger.                 Double Giken has developed a technology to identify the words a patient thinks from the blood flow in the brain and project them on a screen for ALS patients who cannot move their eyelids or fingers. The technology is based on a device that uses near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) to determine "yes/no" from brain activity. The patient selects one word at a time and only the vowel sound of the word to be communicated, and the number of words is used to analogize the candidate words to be communicated and show them on the screen. The system, which consists of a personal computer and a terminal, will go on sale in September at the earliest.
