DPJ takes control of upper house
TOKYO, Japan - Emperor Akihito addresses the opening of an extraordinary session of the Diet in the House of Councillors chamber on Aug. 7. The main opposition Democratic Party of Japan took control of the upper house for the first time, with senior DPJ lawmaker Satsuki Eda elected president of the chamber, marking the start of political gridlock between the ruling and opposition camps.
