MOF hires former Dentsu official to push public relations

TOKYO, Japan - Yoshio Masuda (file photo), a former employee of the advertising agency Dentsu Inc., was hired by the Finance Ministry on Oct. 15 as a public relations officer. Masuda, 48, who worked at Dentsu's corporate brand planning division, is the first person from the private sector employed on contract by the Finance Ministry, ministry officials say. (Kyodo)

                LOS ANGELES, United States - Former Lockheed executive Archibold Kotchian (in file photo taken in July 1972) died Dec. 14, a person from an apartment facility for elderly people in Palo Alto, California, where he lived, said Dec. 20. He was 94. He is known in Japan for his congressional testimony in February 1976 that his company had given money to foreign officials to sell Lockheed airplanes, which later led to the indictments of more than a dozen people in Japan, including former Prime Minister Kakuei Tanaka, on charges of bribe-taking.

                    TOKYO, Japan - Takeo Obayashi (file photo), chief executive officer and chairman of Obyayashi Corp., who hails from the contractor's founding family, will step down to take responsibility for the arrest of company officials for alleged bid rigging for a public works project, the company said on June 4. President Norio Wakimura will step down. Toru Shiraishi, 59, senior managing officer, will take over as CEO and president after receiving approval at a shareholders meeting scheduled for June 28.                       FUKUOKA, Japan - Ura Koyama (in undated file photo), the oldest person in Japan, died of pneumonia on April 5 aged 114 at a hospital in Iizuka, Fukuoka Prefecture, her family said. She became the country's oldest person after Mitoyo Kawate in Hiroshima City died at 114 on Nov. 13, 2003. Yone Minagawa, 112, who lives in Akaike, Fukuoka Prefecture, has now become the oldest person in Japan, according to the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare.
