Iwakuni mayor tenders resignation over U.S. base dispute
YAMAGUCHI, Japan - Iwakuni Mayor Katsusuke Ihara, an opponent of a central government plan to relocate U.S. jet fighters to a base in the city, speaks at a news conference after his resignation was approved by the city assembly on Dec. 26. He tendered his resignation following a clash over the city's supplementary budget with the city assembly, which is dominated by supporters of the relocation plan. (Kyodo)
