BOJ chief nominee Muto vows to boost BOJ independence

TOKYO, Japan - Bank of Japan Deputy Governor Toshiro Muto, the government's nominee to succeed outgoing BOJ chief Toshihiko Fukui, testifies before the Rules and Administration Committee of the House of Representatives on March 11. Sitting behind him are Masaaki Shirakawa (L), professor at Kyoto University, and Takatoshi Ito (R), professor at the University of Tokyo, who have been nominated as BOJ deputy governors. Muto told the Diet that he will make efforts to boost the central bank's independence from the government as the opposition camp threatened to block his promotion over his career background as a former vice finance minister.
