Gov't may require telecom firms to collect used cellphones

          On August 22, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) announced that three convenience store companies, Seven-Eleven Japan, FamilyMart, and Lawson, will begin a demonstration experiment for joint delivery. For one week from August 1, the delivery trucks will be sent from each company's distribution bases to XFRONTIER, a joint delivery center of Sagawa Express (Koto Ward, Tokyo). They will then deliver beverages, confectionery, daily goods and other items to a total of 40 stores in the bay area of Tokyo.             Aerology Lab (Minoh City, Osaka Prefecture) announced on April 14 that it has developed a prototype of a "purely Japanese" flying robot (drone), "AeroRange Pro" (photo), which consists entirely of parts made in Japan. In general, drones rely on parts made in China for most of their components. The company aims to start mass production in small lots by December. (Minato Ward, Osaka City), which operates an open innovation base, Kobashi Robotics (Minami Ward, Okayama City), which supports mass production, and Liberace (Shinjuku Ward, Tokyo), which comprehensively supports venture businesses from trial manufacture to mass production. The company is promoting speedy manufacturing in cooperation with town factories in Kansai and other regions. The hybrid drone combines an engine and an electric motor.               In the convenience store industry, where intensifying competition has been combined with a shortage of labor, the three major companies are workingto demonstrate unmanned cash registers and review 24-hour operations. In such a situation, Ishida (Sakyo Ward, Kyoto City), a long-established weighing scale manufacturer, has teamed up with Orebo, a regional convenience store in Fukui Prefecture, to develop a new system that uses artificial intelligence (AI) to save labor at the cash register. The price of the system, excluding consumption tax, is about 3 million yen. Although it is more expensive than Ishida's regular scales, it is expected to save labor in processing and cooking areas of supermarkets in addition to stores that handle side dishes, and inquiries are strong.
