TOKYO, Japan - A researcher at RIKEN BSI-TOYOTA Collaboration Center demonstrates an electric wheelchair moved by a user's brain waves to the media in Tokyo on June 29. Gear on the user's head can sense changes in his or her brain waves, analyze them and transmit them to the wheelchair's motor. (Kyodo)

        CAPE CANAVERAL, United States - Japanese astronaut Takao Doi (C) waves to well-wishers as he and other members of the U.S. space shuttle Endeavour crew head to the Kennedy Space Center launch pad in Cape Canaveral, Florida, in the evening of March 10 to await liftoff scheduled for 2:28 a.m. (3:28 p.m. Japan time) on March 11.           TOKYO, Japan - Photo of a collision test involving a pop-up engine hood developed by Nissan Motor Co. to mitigate the physical shock to a pedestrian's head. According to Nissan, when a sensor in the front bumper detects a collision with a pedestrian, a control unit gauges the intensity of the impact and immediately determines whether to raise the hood of the car by about 10 centimeters.
