Retiring Sugiyama advances in doubles at Toray Pan Pacific Open
TOKYO, Japan - Japanese ace Ai Sugiyama (L) is tearful as her doubles partners and fellow players on the WTA Tour, led by world No. 1 Dinara Safina (R), pay a tribute to Sugiyama in an on court ceremony at the start of the Toray Pan Pacific Open, the last tourney of the Japanese player's career, at Ariake tennis Forest Park in Tokyo on Sept. 27, 2009. Sugiyama earlier this month made the decision to call time on her career amid a frustrating slide in form that has seen her plummet down the singles world rankings. (Kyodo)
