Sugiyama forced to retire in singles swansong

TOKYO, Japan - Japan's Ai Sugiyama returns the ball to Russian Nadia Petrova in their first round match at the Toray Pan Pacific Open tennis championship at Ariake Tennis Forest Park in Tokyo on Sept. 28, 2009. Sugiyama pulled out in the second set trailing 6-0, 2-1 to Petrova, saying the aftereffects of a high temperature and stomach problems made impossible to continue playing. (Kyodo)
