Niigata residents get iodine pills to prepare for nuclear mishap
Residents of Kashiwazaki, Niigata Prefecture, northwestern Japan, receive potassium iodine pills on Sept. 17, 2015, that will mitigate the risk of thyroid cancer in the event of a nuclear disaster. Iodine pills were distributed to 320 residents on the first day out of some 20,000 people living within 5 kilometers of Tokyo Electric Power Co.'s Kashiwazaki-Kariwa nuclear plant. (Kyodo)
