Special plane begins service between Turkey and Japan
Kushimoto Mayor Katsumasa Tashima makes a speech at Kansai airport in Osaka Prefecture on Dec. 3, 2015, during a send-off ceremony for a Turkish Airlines jet which began its service between Istanbul and the western Japanese airport the same day. The jet, painted to resemble the Turkish Airlines plane that was used to evacuate Japanese nationals from Tehran during the Iran-Iraq War, is named "KUSHIMOTO" after the Japanese coastal town where an Ottoman frigate sank in an 1890 typhoon. The name celebrates the friendship between the two countries, as 69 of the 587 people aboard the warship survived due to rescue efforts by local people. (Kyodo)
